Every year, more and more of the St. Kitts community comes together to help those in need. For the sixth year, the St. Christopher Children's Home has relied on this one event to bring in enough funds to keep the non-profit running and to provide its young residents with a stable, nurturing, and fun environment. If weren't there in person, come along and join us in spirit!
What do you do when you have an island encircled by the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and no one on island knows how to sail those waters? You find some budding seafarers and teach them! Today's 5 to 15 year olds could be the next Olympians, charter captains, or regatta participants. Come read how one man's vision, with lots of help from like minds, is working to turn kids to mariners.
Whether you've lived here all your life or are just visiting, the Scenic Railway Tour is a fun way to see the island. You'll be serenaded a-cappella style, plied with beverages (many with rum) & light snacks, and learn lots of tidbits about the historical and current points of interest you pass. Traveling VIP style, you'll truly feel like royalty when you find people waving to you as you go by, so be sure to practice your wave technique before you board.
"My thoughts drift to my things that are impacting my life. I allow the thoughts to come and go as I enter into a rhythm with hands, body, clay and board. It's a consistent rocking back and forth as clay hits the board over and over again. I am in my own world!" Let Carla Astaphan take you into The Potter's House.
If you've never tasted celery wine or parsley brandy, you're missing out on an adventure for your tastebuds. Nothing like getting your serving of fruits or vegetables with a bit of a buzz. That counts, doesn't it?
If you missed the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society's Emancipation Festival, you missed something really special. Bravo to the organizers and performers for providing such an entertaining and engaging afternoon.
You might be surprised to learn that there's a new farm in town - on the Southeast Peninsula. That's right, the part of the island you're more likely to see cactus than tomatoes. Until now, that is. The farm is huge and is growing so many things, it might be easier to list what's not sprouting up rather than what is. Although, I can't think of anything offhand.
Kenneth Samuel of Kenneth's Dive Center has been diving the waters around St. Kitts for over 50 years. When he saw that more was being taken from the sea than given back, he went from being a part of the problem to becoming an outspoken advocate for the disappearing creatures unable to speak for themselves.
You are getting hungry...very hungry.... How many places do you go that switch out successful items on their menu as they run out of it because they want you to try something new next time? Well, that's Ti Amo's philosophy. They're sure you'll have many gelato favorites and will enjoy all the other items on their menu too.
A night watch and a morning tagging session spent with the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network. "As they came in, stumbling onshore after a long snorkel with their heavy finds, there was much excitement; it was kind of like watching a well-oiled triage unit, except that patients were quite healthy" Photo: Archie Tweddle-Williams 2015. Delvin is someone you can't help but root for: a young Kittitian with a dream who worked his tail off in various restaurants, learning the skills and nuances of the business, steadily moving up the ladder until he felt he was ready to make the leap and go out on his own. He's excited to show everyone what he can do.
Hashers have found everything from broken water mains (in remote places) to other ruins that have never been documented before. On this one, a hasher found an incredibly heavy piece of a cast-iron cannon that must have fallen or been pushed off the Brimstone Hill Fortress cliff.
Come take a walk with me down South Friar's Bay Beach and see what kind of discoveries we make.
"...how can you not like a guy who points out that he doesn't have stools at the bar because he wants everyone to look at the beach. A guy who doesn't have wifi because he has beach-fi. He wants you to communicate with the beach & sea. He wants you to relax. Amen."
